It is named after the Ain River and is bordered by the Saône and Rhône rivers.
Main town (préfecture): Bourg-en-Bresse (famous for its Bresse chicken).
The department is very diverse, with four main landscapes:
Bresse → fertile plains, agriculture, and renowned poultry.
Dombes → ponds and marshes, bird sanctuary.
Bugey → hills and Jura mountains, lakes, and waterfalls.
Pays de Gex → at the foot of the Jura Mountains, near Geneva
Ain combines countryside, nature, industry (near Lyon and Geneva), and historical heritage (medieval villages such as Pérouges).
It is one of the fastest-growing departments in France in terms of population and economy.
In short: diverse, green, delicious food, and a peaceful contrast to its bustling neighbors Lyon and Geneva.
