Sundarbans National Park (India)

The Sundarbans covers 10,000 km2 of land and water (more than half of it in India, the rest in Bangladesh) in the Ganges delta. 

It contains the world's largest area of mangrove forests. 

A number of rare or endangered species live in the park, including tigers, aquatic mammals, birds and reptiles.

Chorá with the Monastery of Saint-John (Greece)

The small island of Pátmos in the Dodecanese is reputed to be where St John the Theologian wrote both his Gospel and the Apocalypse. 

A monastery dedicated to the ‘beloved disciple’ was founded there in the late 10th century and it has been a place of pilgrimage and Greek Orthodox learning ever since. 

The fine monastic complex dominates the island. 

The old settlement of Chorá, associated with it, contains many religious and secular buildings.

Völklingen Ironworks (Germany)

The ironworks, which cover some 6 ha, dominate the city of Völklingen. 

Although they have recently gone out of production, they are the only intact example, in the whole of western Europe and North America, of an integrated ironworks that was built and equipped in the 19th and 20th centuries and has remained intact.

A coconut or coconut is not a nut, but a coconut palm-stone fruit, the mesocarp of which is not fleshy but fibrous.

Inside the hard endocarp surrounds the seed with three clearly visible germ openings.

Classical Gardens of Suzhou (China)

Red Bay Basque Whaling Station (Canada)

Red Bay, established by Basque mariners in the 16th century at the north-eastern tip of Canada on the shore of the Strait of Belle Isle is an archaeological site that provides the earliest, most complete and best preserved testimony of the European whaling tradition. 

Gran Baya, as it was called by those who founded the station in 1530s, was used as a base for coastal hunting, butchering, rendering of whale fat by heading to produce oil and storage. 

It became a major source of whale oil which was shipped to Europe where it was used for lighting. 

The site, which was used in the summer months, includes remains of rendering ovens, cooperages, wharves, temporary living quarters and a cemetery, together with underwater remains of vessels and whale bone deposits. 

The station was used for some 70 years, before the local whale population was depleted.
