The breed is intelligent, reliable, spirited, and has great stamina, with a noble head, concave nose, and pony features.
Originally descended from prehistoric Celtic ponies, it has been influenced by Roman horses and Arabian blood since the Middle Ages and used for riding, harness work, hunting, draught animals, and sports such as dressage and jumping.
It is classified into types: Section A (Welsh Mountain Pony, max. 122 cm, small and graceful), Section B (Welsh Pony, max. 137 cm, larger for riding), Section C (Welsh Pony of Cob Type, max. 137 cm, sturdy for children to teenagers), and Sections D/E (Welsh Cob, 138-155 cm, heavy-boned, dark-colored, suitable for adults).
