It revives old sailing traditions and is listed as intangible cultural heritage.
It revolves around traditional sailing without a motor (only wind, power, or trees).
The name comes from the old practice of transporting Frisian cow manure ("shit") by sailing ship to the bulb fields in the Bollenstreek (Bulb Region).
Main elements: Shit Race → sailing race from Workum to Warmond (round trip) with a symbolic load of dried cow manure.
Beurtveer → fleet of ships sailing past IJsselmeer harbors.
Fishing Days → traditional fishing with sails and hand power, fish auction in Workum.
Liereliet → maritime music festival.
Sometimes also includes clog sailing and a nautical market.
In short: a mix of exciting sailing competitions, folklore, music, and a message about sustainability—all powered by the wind.
