Pea Soup Cooking

Pea soup cooking (the preparation of traditional pea soup/snert) has been officially recognized as intangible heritage in the Netherlands since 2018/2019.
It is included in the Intangible Heritage Inventory of the Netherlands, coordinated by the Intangible Heritage Knowledge Centre of the Netherlands (UNESCO Convention).

Why heritage?
Long history: for centuries, a one-pot dish with non-perishable ingredients (split peas, onion, carrot, leek, celeriac, smoked/salted pork).
Recipes are often passed down through families, with many regional and personal variations → demonstrates the dynamism of a living tradition.
The Pea Soup Cooking World Championship (held annually in Groningen since around 1994) helps keep the tradition alive, promote it, and pass it on to younger generations.
The addition was symbolically made during the 25th anniversary of the World Pea Soup Cooking Championship in 2019.
It's a typical Dutch winter dish that remains popular and culturally relevant.
