Goiás is a top producer of soy, corn, sugarcane, beef, tomatoes, and garlic.
The state has one of Brazil's largest livestock populations and a rapidly growing agribusiness.
History: Discovered during the 18th-century gold rush by bandeirantes from São Paulo.
The former capital was Goiás Velho (a UNESCO World Heritage site for its colonial architecture).
In 1988, the northern part was separated as the state of Tocantins.
