It has glossy blue-black upperparts, white underparts and a distinctive white throat with a narrow black band.
The bird is 14-17 cm long and has a forked tail.
It breeds in open areas such as grasslands and savannahs, often near water and builds cup-shaped nests of mud.
The white-throated swallow feeds on insects that it catches in the air.
It migrates to central Africa during the African winter (April-September).
Threats include habitat loss and pesticides, but the species is not yet endangered.
