Manitoba became a province in 1870 and grew through the acquisition of land from the Northwest Territories.
The name comes from the Algonquian word "manitou-wapow", meaning "the narrows of the manitou", referring to a spiritual force.
Economically strong, with low costs and good infrastructure, it also has a port on Hudson Bay.
