It comprises a series of ten archaeological sites and one monument of the medieval Kingdom of Khuttal (7th–16th centuries), situated between the Panj and Vakhsh rivers and the foothills of the Pamir Mountains.
The sites illustrate Khuttal's role in the Silk Road trade: it supplied salt, gold, silver, and horses, and served as a hub for cultural, religious, and technological exchange with surrounding empires.
The remains include Buddhist temples (such as Ajina-Teppa with a large reclining Buddha), palaces (including Kalai Hulbuk, the residence of the rulers), settlements, production centers, and caravanserais.
