Hubei

Hubei (湖北) is a province in central China, located on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang). 
The name literally means "north of the lake" (referring to Dongting Lake). 

Capital: Wuhan – a huge metropolis (population 13+ million), a major industrial, educational, transportation, and logistics hub in Central China. 
Nickname: "Province of a Thousand Lakes" (due to its numerous lakes and wetlands). 
Geography: 
West: Mountainous + the world-famous Three Gorges Dam near Yichang. 
East & Central: Flat, fertile Jianghan Plain with numerous lakes and rivers. 
Crossed by the mighty Yangtze and Han Rivers. 
Economy: Hubei is among the top 7–10 economically strongest provinces in China. 
Wuhan is a major center for: automotive industry, steel, electronics & high-tech, optics, and education (one of China's largest university centers). 

Highlights & culture: Cradle of ancient Chu culture (ancestor of many Chinese traditions). 
World Heritage Site: Shennongjia (primeval forest & biodiversity). 
Historical treasures: Marquis Yi bronze bells (the heaviest musical instrument in the world). 
Famous sites: Yellow Crane Tower, East Lake (Wuhan), Three Gorges, Wudang Mountains (Taoism).
