The province lies between the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) and Huai River basins.
Borders: Jiangsu and Zhejiang (east), Jiangxi (south), Hubei and Henan (west), and a small part of Shandong (north).
Geography: The north is flat and agricultural (part of the North China Plain), while the south is mountainous, with the famous Huangshan (Yellow Mountains) as its highlight – a UNESCO World Heritage site and very popular with tourists and artists.
Also worth visiting are Mount Jiuhua (a Buddhist pilgrimage site) and Chaohu Lake.
Economy: Traditionally an agricultural province (grain, rice), but in recent decades has seen rapid industrialization, especially around Hefei (science & technology, automotive, electronics).
Hefei is one of the fastest-growing cities in China.
Culture: Known for Hui culture (Huizhou architecture with white walls and black roofs, ancient villages like Xidi and Hongcun), Huangmei Opera, tea (Huangshan Maofeng), and Taoist influences.
In short: a mix of fertile plains in the north, beautiful mountains in the south, rapid modern development, and a rich traditional culture.
