Capital: Samraong (or Samrong City).
Population: Around 200,000–276,000 inhabitants (relatively low population density).
Economy: Primarily agriculture (rice, cassava, maize), forestry, and limited cross-border trade.
Key Features: Historically highly charged: from 1989 to 1998, the province was the last stronghold of the Khmer Rouge.
Anlong Veng was their final headquarters, including Ta Mok's house and Pol Pot's cremation site.
It remains one of the most landmine-ridden areas in Cambodia.
Nature: mountainous and forested in the north, Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary in the southeast, several waterfalls and temples (such as Prasat Ta Muen Thom on the border with Thailand).
The province was only officially established in 1999 (from parts of Siem Reap and Banteay Meanchey), but its name already refers to the return of the area from Siam (Thailand) to Cambodia in 1907.
In short: a quiet, sparsely populated border province with a troubled past (Khmer Rouge and landmines), but also with potential for dark history tourism and nature.
