Whit Monday Rides in Vollenhove

Whit Monday Rides in Vollenhove is an old folkloric tradition that takes place every year on Whit Monday in Vollenhove (Overijssel).
Children (usually aged 4 to 14, with approximately 200-260 participants) ride in a cheerful procession on decorated flatbed farm wagons, pulled by tractors, through the beautiful "Land Veno" surrounding the town.
The ride lasts approximately 2-3 hours, with stops for drinks, sweets, and treats.
The event is organized by the Vollenhove Association for Folk Entertainment (V.V.V.V.) and has been on the Dutch Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory since 2018.
Its origins lie in medieval "processions" used to invoke fertility upon crops.
It used to be an outing for young people, but after the war, it was adapted for children to preserve the tradition.

It is a unique, vibrant tradition in the Netherlands!
