The capital is Palmas, a planned city since 1989.
The economy is mainly based on agriculture (soy, corn, rice, pineapple), livestock and services, with a focus on agro-export.
The landscape consists of cerrado (savannah) and a transition zone to the Amazon rainforest, with important rivers such as the Tocantins and Araguaia.
Banana Island, the largest river island in the world, is located in the southwest.
The state has a tropical climate with a dry winter and attracts ecotourists to areas such as Jalapão State Park.
