Shimane

Shimane (島根県, Shimane-ken) is a prefecture in western Japan, in the Chūgoku region on the island of Honshu.
It lies on the Sea of Japan (north) and borders the Chūgoku Mountains (south).

The capital is Matsue.
Shimane is the second least densely populated prefecture in Japan (approximately 665,000 inhabitants) and is known as a quiet, rural region with much pristine nature.
Highlights: Izumo Taisha — one of the oldest and most important Shinto shrines in Japan (god of marriage).
Matsue Castle — one of the few original castles with a moat.
Iwami Ginzan — historic silver mine (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Adachi Museum of Art — with a beautiful Japanese garden.
Oki Islands and coastal landscapes.
It is a perfect place for those seeking peace, history, nature, and traditional Japanese culture, far away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo or Kyoto.

In short: a hidden gem of Japan!
