Lithops (the living stone)

The living stone (Lithops)

The living stone (Lithops) is a succulent plant that occurs naturally in Namibia and South Africa.
This name is derived from the ancient Greek word λίθος (lithos) which means stone and this name owes the plant to its appearance: they are just living stones.
Each plant has two globular thick leaves that resemble pebbles.
This effect is enhanced because the plant hardly grows above the ground.
A flower grows between the leaves in the flowering period.
When the old leaves die off, new leaves emerge from the center of the plant, where the flower normally appears.

The five most beautiful photos.
