It covers a large part of the Eastern Desert between the Nile Valley and the Red Sea.
It extends from approximately Suez in the north to the border with Sudan in the south.
The capital and largest city is Hurghada (Al-Ghardaqah).
Known for: tourism (diving, beaches, resorts such as Hurghada, El Gouna, and Safaga), oil and mining (oil fields in the Gulf of Suez, phosphates, gold, and manganese), and rugged desert landscapes with mountains reaching approximately 2,000 meters.
The population is relatively small (about a few hundred thousand), concentrated mainly along the coast.
It is one of the largest governorates in terms of land area (about one-fifth of Egypt), but sparsely populated due to the desert.
In short: it is the Egyptian coastal area on the Red Sea with a high level of tourism, oil, and desert.
