Characteristics: A mix of nature (mountains such as Mount Tsukuba, lakes such as Kasumigaura, coastline), agriculture (often called the "cuisine of East Japan" thanks to vegetables, fruit, natto, and sweet potatoes), and science/technology (Tsukuba is an important research city with a university and institutes).
It is located about 1 to 1.5 hours' travel from Tokyo and is ideal for a day trip or short stay.
