The oblast is located in the southeast of the East European Plain and borders Kazakhstan to the east.
The Volga and the Don flow through the area, which receives little precipitation due to a strong continental climate.
Important industries are metalworking, petroleum refining and chemical industry.
This does lead to heavy environmental pollution in Volgograd and the surrounding area.
