Milan is the second largest city in Italy and the most important city in northern Italy. 

The name comes from the Latin Mediolanum. 

This means "in the middle of the plain" and refers to the fact that the city is located in the middle of the Po Valley. 

Milan is the capital of Lombardy, one of the most developed regions of Italy.
