Dortmund is a kreisfreie Stadt located in the west of Germany, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The city has 587,010 inhabitants, making it the largest city in the Ruhr area and the third largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia after Cologne and Düsseldorf and the eighth city in Germany.
