The Manambolo rises in the highlands of Madagascar, about 130 kilometers west of Antananarivo.
The river has an orange-red color due to eroded sediments and flows to the Straits of Mozambique.
About 70 kilometers before the river reaches the Straits of Mozambique, it cuts through the Manambolo gorge.
