The Pied Piper of Hamelin

The Pied Piper came to Hamelin to fight the plague of rats.
The people praised him and promised a payment.
He lured the rats with a flute and let them drown in the Weser. Because the city government refused to pay, he returned when the residents were in the church, played the flute and enticed 130 children.
He led them into a cave and locked them up.
In other versions, he takes them to the Koppenberg and everyone disappears.
In modern versions, a happy ending is sometimes added to the story: the Pied Piper gets his money and brings the children back.
