Quebrada de Humahuaca (Argentina)

Quebrada de Humahuaca follows the line of a major cultural route, the Camino Inca, along the spectacular valley of the Rio Grande, from its source in the cold high desert plateau of the High Andean lands to its confluence with the Rio Leone some 150 km to the south.
The valley shows substantial evidence of its use as a major trade route over the past 10,000 years.
It features visible traces of prehistoric hunter-gatherer communities, of the Inca Empire (15th to 16th centuries) and of the fight for independence in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Hierapolis-Pamukkale (Turkey)

Deriving from springs in a cliff almost 200 m high overlooking the plain, calcite-laden waters have created at Pamukkale (Cotton Palace) an unreal landscape, made up of mineral forests, petrified waterfalls and a series of terraced basins.
At the end of the 2nd century B.C. the dynasty of the Attalids, the kings of Pergamon, established the thermal spa of Hierapolis.
The ruins of the baths, temples and other Greek monuments can be seen at the site.

Three Castles, Defensive Wall and Ramparts of the Market-Town of Bellinzona (Bellinzona - Switzerland)

The Bellinzona site consists of a group of fortifications grouped around the castle of Castelgrande, which stands on a rocky peak looking out over the entire Ticino valley.
Running from the castle, a series of fortified walls protect the ancient town and block the passage through the valley.
A second castle (Montebello) forms an integral part of the fortifications, while a third but separate castle (Sasso Corbaro) was built on an isolated rocky promontory south-east of the other fortifications.

Cave of Altamira and Paleolithic Cave Art of Northern Spain (Santillana del Mar - Spain)

Seventeen decorated caves of the Paleolithic age were inscribed as an extension to the Altamira Cave, inscribed in 1985.
The property will now appear on the List as Cave of Altamira and Paleolithic Cave Art of Northern Spain.
The property represents the apogee of Paleolithic cave art that developed across Europe, from the Urals to the Iberian Peninusula, from 35,000 to 11,000 BC.
Because of their deep galleries, isolated from external climatic influences, these caves are particularly well preserved.
The caves are inscribed as masterpieces of creative genius and as the humanity’s earliest accomplished art.
They are also inscribed as exceptional testimonies to a cultural tradition and as outstanding illustrations of a significant stage in human history.

Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape (South Africa)

Mapungubwe is set hard against the northern border of South Africa, joining Zimbabwe and Botswana.
It is an open, expansive savannah landscape at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers.
Mapungubwe developed into the largest kingdom in the sub-continent before it was abandoned in the 14th century.
What survives are the almost untouched remains of the palace sites and also the entire settlement area dependent upon them, as well as two earlier capital sites, the whole presenting an unrivalled picture of the development of social and political structures over some 400 years.
